How to Pack for a Move

by | Sep 6, 2024 | Highlighted, Organizing

What’s the most stressful part of moving home? Many people would agree that it’s the packing that takes the longest and feels the toughest. Protecting breakables and ensuring you don’t miss any items can keep you feeling on edge until the move is over. However, you can make your life (and home move) easier by following these simple steps.

Invest in Packing Supplies
Before you even start decluttering or rolling rugs, make sure you’ve got the appropriate packing supplies. We’re talking tape, scissors, packing knives, and so many boxes. Don’t fall into the trap of using inexpensive soft bags instead of boxes. While they may seem suitable for clothes and other soft items, they can roll about in removal vehicles and get torn, potentially damaging your goods.

Don’t Leave Packing Until the Last Minute
It’s so tempting to look at your neat, orderly home and think, “Packing this up will only take me a few hours.” You’re definitely wrong, and it will absolutely take several days at least. Bear in mind you’ll end up decluttering, donating, and reorganizing everything you own. As soon as you have a confirmed moving date, get rid of anything you don’t want to keep and pack your non-essentials. Keep cookware, toiletries, and clothes/shoes you wear regularly until last.

Prepare Appliances Properly
If you’ve got appliances with multiple connections, like a TV or Wi-Fi router, take a picture of the back of them before you unplug everything. That way, you can set devices up with ease in your new home. Defrost refrigerators and ensure they’re dry before packing. Empty any mobile AC units or dehumidifiers of water.

Once you’re ready to move, put the heaviest items in the moving van first. Consider keeping any valuables in a bag on your person where possible.

Key Takeaways:

  • Get your supplies organized first in one specific area, with a table that you can use while packing
  • Start packing slowly weeks before you move, and make sure to go through your stuff and get rid of unwanted items
  • Have a plan to keep you organized, and label everything by its room as you continue packing

“When you buy boxes, remember that you’ll need different sizes plus a few specialty boxes.”
