How to Label Moving Boxes: Read and Write With Care

by | May 12, 2023 | Organizing

A successful move hinges on doing the small things correctly. Labeling boxes is a great example. If done properly, it eliminates the need to open containers to check what’s inside. You can adopt many labeling practices. For example, boxes with fragile items should be labeled “fragile” so you know which containers require extra care. Additionally, use high-quality label tape and markers to speed up the work.

Here are a few more tips on writing effective labels.

Use the Pack, Seal, Label Method
The pack, seal, label method refers to the timing of your labels. You shouldn’t label your boxes before packing because your plans may change. Likewise, you may forget what’s inside if you postpone your labeling.

Therefore, label your containers shortly after sealing them.

Assemble High-Quality Tools
Markers might be the most important packing tool. Look for waterproof and permanent products, so you don’t have to worry about rain affecting your labels. You can also buy ready-made labels from a moving company or make custom alternatives.

Use Colors
Incorporate a variety of colors for easier identification. For example, you can use a blue marker and tape for bathroom items. Red can denote bedroom belongings, whereas green or orange can be for basement stuff.

Rely on Numbers
Numbers can further speed up identification. A box with a blue label and number 1 can store toothbrushes, makeup, and hair care products. You can use the same color but write number 2 on another box for towels, fragile items, and bath robes.

Label the Top and Bottom
Labeling both sides ensures you know the contents of the box, regardless of the way you store it. Although it might not seem much, it can save a lot of time when sorting out your belongings.

Key Takeaways:

  • Make sure that you get the proper tools to label your boxes, such as high-quality markers and colored tape.
  • Write the word “fragile” on your boxes in bold and big letters if there are fragile items inside.
  • Make sure that you don’t postpone any of your labeling – instead get everything done ahead of time.

“Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but if you ask 10 random people to name the most disorganized process in life, you can rest assured that at least a few of the answers will be about the transitional period of moving to another home.”
