How to Get Rid of Stuff Before Moving

by | Aug 14, 2020 | Features

Anyone who has ever lived anywhere for more than three years running understands that things pile up and accumulate. Moreover, getting rid of these piles can be incredibly difficult, as they consist of items that come attached with tender memories and a sense of who the owner is, as well as what she cares most about. However, while off-loading reams of sentiment-carrying items is undoubtedly hard, hoisting said items from home A to home B can be a lot harder. It can also be very pricey.  Calculate in the fact that the moving cost is all about the weight of all of those items and it becomes pretty obvious that when it comes to moving less is more.

There are other great reasons to offload before the big move. Cleaning house before you move the house will ultimately, save you money of course. But, it will also save you time, stress and lots of space. Have a garage sale before you move and you can even make money on your road to saving it. Dump the stuff you were never that enamored of anyway. Ditch the extras, those clearly out of date items, and those things you never really understood what to do with exactly. The more big things, like furniture, that you can get rid of the better. Categorize your things by size and value and get busy. Give it away. Sell it. Recycle it, donate it. Then breathe better and plant your feet on the road to your new home.

Key Takeaways:

  • Odds are if you’ve lived anywhere for at least five years you have a ton of stuff, stuff you are loathe to get rid of because it epitomizes your passions and your sense of self.
  • Simply moving from one home to another within the same state can be an expensive proposition.
  • If the goal is to set up housekeeping in another state all together, it gets even more costly.

“And naturally, things are perfectly fine until the moment comes when circumstances force you to move to another home, often in another city or a different state. For when it’s time to move house, you just can’t take all your possessions with you. Or to put it better, you can but [maybe] you shouldn’t.”
