What to Do on the First Day in Your New Home [10 Must-Do Tasks]

by | Nov 8, 2018 | Features

You’ve made the down payment, received the keys, and taken every item out of the moving van and placed it in the appropriate room. However, moving day and its attendant woes is not necessarily finished. There are a few things that new homeowners should take care of almost as soon as they enter their brand new abode, beyond getting all the fragile stuff stowed into the proper rooms. Firstly, check all the major utilities, such as water and power. You will want to make sure they’re running. It’s also wise to check the meters and record the numbers carefully. Secondary utilities, like cable and Internet can usually wait a few days. Even if your home passed an inspection, it’s still a good idea to do a run through on the day of arrival. Check for drippy faucets, leaks, signs of vermin or insect infestation. Make sure all locks are working. Hopefully you will have placed all items into their proper rooms. It’s also a good idea to have designated first-open boxes for those things that you must have for the first few nights. Take special care of small children and pets. They are apt to be the most scared and uncomfortable. So, try to give them a semblance of a habitat and some normalcy that first night. Also get beds assembled and ready to go. It’s a good idea to have an easy-access toiletries bag for everyone, so those hygiene supplies can go out right away and everyone can have a soothing bath, or shower. Plan to have the first mealtime easy going. Get a little grocery, assuming you have a fridge at the ready. Or order in for that first night.

Key Takeaways:

  • The things that can be done on the first day of moving into a new home depends on the time of the day when one moved in.
  • The first thing to do on the first day is to check if all the utilities are running. Make a note of your electricity and water meter readings also.
  • Do a preliminary home inspection on your first day looking for signs that the home might have some trouble.

“Unfortunately for you, your Move day is not over yet – not until you close your eyes and call it a day. And until then, you still have a number of very important things to do.”
