Moving Cross Country with Pets: Vital Tips to Remember

by | Dec 6, 2024 | Highlighted, Moving

Moving cross country is stressful enough for any homeowner, let alone their pets. The change of location, scenery, and even new climate can be confusing and frightening to your animal friends too. It’s vital to consider their needs when planning your move and make a stressful process that much easier on them.

We’ve got a few tips to help out.

First, it’s a good idea to take your pets to a trusted vet before the move. It’s important that your animals are up to date on all the necessary shots and vaccinations. This goes double if you’re moving to a state with high incidents of diseases like rabies. Also, get all vet records and past medications from your current vet to help your new one understand your animal’s medical history.

In addition to checkups, it’s a good idea to ask your vet what to provide for your pets on the journey. Some may suggest sedatives or different care techniques to make for a less stressful journey. If you haven’t done so already, get your pet chipped (a small microchip inserted under your pet’s skin with vital information) or ensure they have an ID tag. If they get frightened and escape during the move, they’ll be easier to find and identify.

When the day of the move comes, maintain your pets’ routines as other things begin to change.

During the journey itself, ensure there’s plenty of water to keep them hydrated and some food if necessary. Try to have them in the same vehicle as you. Bring familiar items (toys, blankets, containers, etc.) to keep familiar sights and smells around.

Once in your new home, your pets will likely be anxious and confused. Give them their own place in this new environment, complete with all their comforts. If they get too overwhelmed, they’ll have a safe spot to retreat to. In time they’ll get more comfortable and explore other rooms and the outdoors, but don’t rush things.

Key Takeaways:

  • Moving across the country with one or more pets can be a stressful experience.
  • Prior to your move, take your pet to the vet for a health assessment, vaccinations, and medication updates.
  • Know the local and state laws for pet ownership, including any licenses you need to obtain.

“But, just like any other member of the family, it’s important to think of where your pets fit into the move.”
