Found a New Home? Here Are the Next Steps

by | Apr 7, 2023 | Features

Moving into a new home is exciting, especially after a long time of browsing the real estate market and making crucial decisions. While it may seem that there’s nothing left to do other than wait for the movers to arrive, there are several steps to take before the new home fills up with stuff.

First, there’s no better time to get familiar with the new space than while it’s empty. This will provide an opportunity to check whether everything is in the agreed condition. Any discrepancies should be reported to the realtor without hesitation to smooth matters out before settling in.

Second, this will be an ideal moment to inspect home entrances and change locks. Furthermore, electronic and security systems should be inspected to ensure all is in working order.

Third, utilities and electric, gas, and water installations should be checked. This job shouldn’t be left until it’s time to hook up appliances or manipulate the water main or circuit breaker. Any manuals, warranties, and other paperwork relating to utilities should be gathered during this step. Plus, smoke detectors should be inspected.

Fourth, it would be good to review warranty and insurance details so that potential claims can be filed, and all personal belonging protected in the worst case.

Fifth, an address update is recommended right after finding the new home. This includes updates to Medicare, social security, credit card, and bank info. Furthermore, family members, friends, and employers should be notified about the new address as well.

Sixth, an empty new home is prime for a thorough cleaning. This is also a good time to paint the interior since additional items will only make that process more complicated.

Finally, once everything else is done, the new home should be proofed for pets or children. This means securing shelves, wiring, appliances, sharp corners, and windows.

Key Takeaways:

  • Double check and look around for anything that may need repairs.
  • Make sure that you have new or the right locks.
  • Check in on all types of detectors that you have and get the ones you don’t have.

“To increase your personal security and that of your belongings, change the locks on the doors and any codes to gates, the garage door, or the security system.”
